CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born on 7 June 1868 in the Townhead area of Glasgow, close to Glasgow Cathedral. He was one of eleven children and he grew to become one of the most celebrated architects and designersof his generation.Today he is celebrated around the world as one of the most significant talents to emerge in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Mackintosh took his inspiration from Scottish traditions and blended them with the flourish of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Japanese forms. Much of his work has survived and can be seen mainly in and around Glasgow where he worked for 20 years as an architect/designer. Virtually all of his best known work was created here, with perhaps his most famous contribution being the Glasgow School of Art itself, yet he left Glasgow in search of success and died in London , of cancer, on 10 December 1928, in virtual obscurity. His work can be seen today alongside that of his contemporaries who collectively created "The Glasgow Style".
The works of Rennie Mackintosh are now attracting growing attention and are being acclaimed worldwide. Our jewellery collection represents some of his favourite motifs and illustrates his delight in simple, natural forms.
